Vintage Skirt
Embroidery from a Rabari ghagro from Kutch re-worked onto a dark burgundy organza silk skirt. The original skirt was of a similar colour but in a thick handwoven cotton fabric. The body of the skirt is interspersed with ‘barfi’ or diamond motifs using the ‘bavariyo’ stitch and beadwork.
Made on request for a client for Garba, a 9 day long festival celebrated in Gujarat where men and women dance in coordinated circles around a mother deity (Shakti/ Amba/Durga), to honour her as the feminine divine and acknowledge the cyclical nature of life. During the dance, the Goddess remains the one unmoving symbol in the centre while everything around her is in constant movement.
Paired with a backless choli or blouse made from different patterns of striped mashroo fabric.
